31 December 2008

Gym again today for a session with my personal trainer. Bad news!! he decided to weigh me and there was no getting away with the 5 lb weight increase.
After a 10 min warm up on the bike I was set a target of running 2 miles in 17.5 mins which I managed to do in 17 mins 29 seconds although the last bit was quite strenuous. The next piece of equipment was the stair climber. This is my least favourite piece of equipment and he put it up to level 7 to start with becaue of my weight gain. I couldn't keep that up so he thankfully put the level down to 4 but increased it to 6 near the end.
2 reps of 15 abs and one of 20 on the ball then finish.
Foodwise I had 2 Oatibix and all bran for brekkie, Cock a Leekie soup for lunch followed by an apple. Tea tonight is a Turkey Dopiaza with boiled rice followed by raspberries and blueberries with Danone yogurt. I need to resist the temptation to have that Naan bread though.
New Year's Eve tonight but I'm not going out celebrating as husband is in Nottingham visiting his parents and friends, not that I could drink anything anyway with 6 lbs to lose!!

30 December 2008

Gym session today. I decided to pop into the gym even though I didn't have it scheduled until tomorrow. Went for a swim yesterday and today did a 5k session at level 2 for 15 mins then level 3 for 5 mins, level 4 for 5 mins and down to level 2 for the last 5 mins. This was at 6.6 mph, 7 mph then 7.5 mph and back to 6.6 mph. The treadmill rises twice to level 2 incline and I just about managed to keep up with it.
Foodwise I was more careful what I ate today after the overindulgence with the chocolates, pies and goodies in the fridge. Weighed myself this morning and found that I'd put 4lbs on. Not good.
Gym again tomorrow with a determination to keep off the goodies until i reach my goal weight.

28 December 2008

Went out at about 10:15 this morning for a 11.65 mile very easy run. I got up at about 6am to have toast and honey and a cup of decaf tea then went back to sleep for a bit. Then hit the road once the food had digested.
I took with me my usual Boots hydration drink to keep my energy levels up and armed with my Garmin, phone and money just in case set off on a slightly icy surface. The sun was out and it was a nice day for a run. I set off down the A6 to bamber Bridge and turned onto the A49 past Leyland Golf Club (which was full by the looks of the car park) I stopped for rehydration drink outside the Railway pub and had a few stretches because my right calf was getting tight. Then onwards to Euxton station and left towards Chorley, past Tesco and Astley Park. Had to make a comfort break at Chorley Hospital, then on home in 2 hrs 11 mins.
When i got home I had my porridge and honey, a drink, and later after my shower I had some poached egg and beans on toast.
Iced my leg and slumped in front of the TV for the rest of the day nibbling on allsorts of leftovers from Christmas dinner.

boxing day

Got back about 2 hrs ago from a measured 10k. Weather was good going but coming back up the final hill was a bit windy (or is that my excuse?). Anyway I managed 1 hr and 41 seconds. Drat and double drat!! I was really trying to push myself to under 1 hour. Splits were:
8:54, 10:21.10:03.9:54,9:20,10:27 mins per mile. That equates to:
6.7, 5.8, 6.0, 6.1, 6.4, 5.7, 6.1 mph.
Maybe I started too fast!! The route is out and back, slightly hilly which shows up in the splits. The start is downhill for about 1 mile or so then it has a slight incline for 2 miles. I don't think I did too badly with my overall average speed, but I really need to work on some interval training to try to get a better speed for the next time I do it.
I had a cup of normal tea (when I say normal that's because I usually have decaff) before I set off and nothing else, so maybe I need to experiment with food/drink intake next time. Boots carbo drink when I got back and porridge with honey for breakfast about 45 mins later ( I know that's a bit late but had to take daughter to work first).
Long run tomorrow.
In-laws have been staying for Christmas, nice to see them but they were both coughing and I'm really hoping they haven't infected me with it. I don't think I could manage yet another month off training. I've been trying my best to stay out of the way but there's only so much you can do without seeming rude. I get really depressed when I can't train and four URTI's in as many months is enough for anyone.

25 december 2008

Merry Christmas everyone. Updating whilst watching Dr Who and digesting my rather large dinner.
Went to the gym on Tuesday and Wednesday. More of the same but slightly harder. Tuesday was interval run for 30 mins followed by abs mostly. Wednesday was cardio at level 7 going on to 8 for the last 10 mins followed by upper body free weights, push ups and bridges. Good workouts.
Tomorrow I'm going to do a measured 10K and time it. I was going to enter the Boxing Day 10K at worden park run by the Red Rose Harriers but am still worried about coming last and i really don't want to do that. Also I want to know that I'm not going to injure myself by doing too much too soon. I know I can do the distance that isn't the problem, it's the speed so I think I might try to do some intervals on the way to see if I can start to speed up.
Took my lovely brother his promised Christmas pud this morning and it was lovely to see him but unfortunately I had to rush off because I was in the middle of making our dinner.
Anyway bye for now.

missed post

I wrote a posting on Wednesday but it seems to have disappeared. Anyway it was a bit boring but as this blog is mainly my running diary I'm going to post it again.

Tuesday gym interval session on the treadmill in5 x 2 min intervals going up to 8 mph followed by 5 x 1 min intervals going up to 9 mph (that was hard for me). Then onto the weight machines doing upper body work and then abs. 1 hour total.

Wednesday gym cardio session on the treadmill level 6 for 10 mins then level 7 for 10 mins and back to level 6 for the final 10 mins. This was followed by lower body strength on the weight machines and abs of course.

I'm not sure why I keep losing stuff I'm typing. I can only think that my hand is catching on something it shouldn't be catching on. I need to check on that because it's very frustrating. The other thing that happens is that my laptop keeps updating when I'm in the middle of doing something and then stuff gets lost for good.

I'm really not into the diet thing at the moment. I've tried all the eating directly after a run thing, but still want something sweet and not very good for me later in the day. I guess my will is deteriorating. I keep convincing myself that if I keep training the calories will take care of themselves and do their job. I'll be glad when Christmas is over and all the goodies have gone. It really is too tempting to have them in the cupboard.

Half watching Emmerdale at the moment which prompted me to talk about the Christmas tree which is on the verge of losing all it's needles before the big day. That's the last time I buy a tree 2 weeks before Christmas!! Last year's was much better it was still full of sap but I only bought it a couple of days before.

I'm going now to look up the race details for boxing day.

TTFN (that shows my age!!)

19 December 2008

I Went out with Chorley Harriers last night. I felt a lot stronger than last week as my cough's more or less gone, but still was not 100%. Lap speeeds for each mile were 6.1,5.0,5.6,5.5,5.5,5.6. according to my Garmin forerunner 405. So not such a good time over the 5.7 miles which took 1:01:44. That's partly because we stopped a few times to firstly get rid of some top layers and sort out the high vis stuff and then to re-group.

Quite a few hecklers around last night, mainly young kids hanging round street corners with nothing better to do but also from some of the cars - well people in the cars to be exact - possibly caused by the flashing santa hat Johnny was wearing and the flashing lights around our legs and arms. Still at least we are seen at night. Safety first and all that.

Long run this weekend. Not sure which day to go for because it's the Christmas do on Saturday.

That's it for now.

Sunday 14 December

Well i went out today. First long run for a fortnight. I decided to do a loop i did when i was training for the Nottingham half. Got my stuff ready the night before, drink in the fridge, clothes in the bathroom ready so's not to disturb he who's always on the computer. Garmin charging up and phone on charge. Set off early doors and blow me if i didn't forget to start the Garmin until i was half way down the road.
I get really frustrated with my Garmin. I know it's a fantastic piece of kit, but it's me. I can't see the small letters on the dial properly. Anyway, I got part way round and looked to see which lap i was up to. Now according to the Garmin i was up to lap 9 which should mean that I've done 8 miles and am on my 9th. NO it didn't. When I was nearing home I looked again at the Garmin, lap 13 great i thought I'd nearly done a half marathon. NOT SO. I eagerly plugged in the Ant sport to check my superb results (after my stretches and porridge - more about that later). 8.59 miles WHAT? A bit of a conflict here thought I so straight onto mapmyrun.org to check it. 9.74. A bit of a difference, but not exactly what I thought I'd done. Note to self to check instruction manual again.

Back to the porridge. I've always hated porridge, ever since I used to make it for mum, in fact before that when I was nursing and we used to have to slop it out to the poor patients for breakfast. It made me heave even thinking of it. The horrible gloopy mass of grey lumpy slop. Don't get me wrong, I've tried it all ways to try to get to like it, but nothing seemed to work until - ta da the dawn of the Oatibix. I love them. Tried them hot one day and it tasted like - yes you've guessed it - porridge. So I thought well if i can stand that I can stand porridge so yesterday I made some with full cream milk - lots of it and honey. My first taste wasn't so good but I persevered and ate the full bowl. (sounds a bit three bears ish). So when I got back from my run today I put on the porridge whilst I did my stretches and re-hydrated. I quite liked it. So now I'm a porridge convert. Hooray, I can get slow release energy at long last.

Another note to self not to eat that Christmas cake and mince pies. I've put 3lbs on this week and am not happy with self. I've got to lose 4lbs before Christmas or my trainer will not be happy and you know what that means! Youngest daughter coming for dinner so must go and peel the veg and get the chicken on.

ps so pleased about the X factor result. Alex was my winner from the start. What a voice!

Saturday 13 December 2008

I'm new to all this but I'm sure someone will let me know if I'm on the wrong track (pardon the pun)
I'm in training for the flora london marathon next year and have been training for a couple of months. I'm up to 10 miles for my long run which I usually do at the weekend.
This week I went to the gym on Tuesday and trained on the treadmill for 30 mins then hit the weights for 20 mins followed by abs for 10 mins. Then Thursday went with my running club but only managed 3.5 miles because I've been suffering with a bad cough for a couple of weeks and have only just got back into it. Yesterday i went to the gym again and did some hill reps and interval sessions followed by the stepper for 20 mins and then abs. Going out either later today or tomorrow for my long run.

I guess at some stage I'll add a photo and some links, but I'll learn as I go on. Anyway, that's it for now
